Crystal Bujol is the Artistic Director for the Gifford Youth Orchestra, a youth enrichment program she created in 2003 at the request of a Gifford Resident, Annie Laura Powell.
She moved to Vero Beach from her hometown of Los Angeles, California, the prior year and was asked by the Facility Director of the Gifford Community Aquatic Center, to produce a Kwanzaa program for the residents of Indian River County in 2002. The celebration not only brought many residents to the pool, which was the intent of the program, but also introduced Dr. Bujol as an event planner and program developer and put her on the radar of Annie Powell.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY:
From that time to now, Dr. Bujol has initiated several other programs and events primarily for the under-served community, at the request of Gifford residents, such as: the Gifford Girls Tennis Club requested by Larry Staley, Parks and Recreation Director; The Gifford Boys Tennis Club, requested by Henry Smith, GYAC Physical Education Coach; the Gifford Community Intergenerational Band, requested by Lawrence Trapp, retired music teacher at Vero Beach High School; Senior Citizens Violin Class, requested by Larry Staley, K-12 Coach; and several other workshops and programs including: Meditation Workshops, Drumming Workshops, Enneagram Workshop for parents, and Budgeting Workshops for Gifford Youth Orchestra students. At the request of Freddie Woolfork, President of the Gifford Front Porch Revitalization Council, she created and published the Gifford Newsletter from 2003 to 2009 for which she was the editor and photographer assisted by many Gifford Community columnists and feature writers.

John Tschinkel, retired engineering executive, author, and devoted patron of classical music, died peacefully at his home in Vero Beach, Florida on March 21. He was 95.
He was born in 1931 in the village of Masern, Yugoslavia — present day Slovenia — in an ancestral home built circa 1613. His father, John, was of a German ethnicity (Gottscheer) and his mother, Maria, of Slovene heritage. The family endured World War II through both Italian and German occupation. At the end of the war, the family, including brother Paul and sister Mitzi, relocated to Austria. In 1950, John boarded his first plane to make the journey alone to America where he settled initially in the German enclave of Ridgewood, New York City.
He arrived with only five years of formal schooling and no English; within months became fluent. He went on to earn both a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He served briefly in the U.S. Air Force before launching a distinguished career in engineering, rising through several executive and leadership roles and retiring in 1996 as Vice President of Engineering at Veeco.
In 1958 he married Anne Wall, who had emigrated from England. They made their home in Great Neck, on the north shore of Long Island, where they raised their two sons, Christopher and Simon. John served as a Commissioner for the Belgrave Water Pollution Control District serving the wider Great Neck area. He was ultimately elected to three three-year terms.
John and Anne moved to Bent Pine in 2000. In retirement, John turned to documenting the historical record of his village. Drawing on his interest in genealogy and a deep appreciation for European history, he wrote “The Bells Ring No More”, a memoir including cultural commentary about growing up in a small, rural town. Published first in Slovenia in Slovene, and later in English in 2012, the book earned him the prestigious Gallus Prize from the Slovene government in 2018, recognizing his contributions to the development of Slovene culture and history.
He and Anne traveled widely, having visited six continents and 49 countries. Their annual attendance at classical music festivals in Europe resulted in John’s patronage of young musicians. He voluntarily arranged and promoted concerts of rising performers at local Vero Beach venues, often covering travel expenses and hosting the musicians in their Bent Pine home.
John was a raconteur, sharing stories over wine and fine food, and a man of intellectual curiosity. He was working on a sequel to his first book at the time of his death.
He died as he had lived — surrounded by family and friends, at home, listening to the classical music he loved. He is survived by Anne, his wife of 67 years; his sons Christopher and Simon; and his brother Paul.
